Where the heck is Slovenia?!!!
Another question I was asked often. Well, I first learned about Slovenia from watching one of the Rick Steves' TV shows on public television. After watching that, I knew this was a country I had to see. I was not disappointed. This tiny little country has everything - lakes, mountains, ocean, charm, and friendly people (just to name a few). It is located above Croatia and below Austria - part of what was once Yugoslavia.
We took a pletna boat ride out to The Island in Lake Bled to tour the church and ring the bell! There is a legend here that when you ring the church bell and make a wish, your wish will come true! Obviously, we all tried; but, I'll never tell what my wish was (or if it came true)! Also, there is a tradition for grooms to carry their brides up the 99 steps to the church to prove they are "fit" for marriage. That would be quite impressive to see, indeed!

A stroll around the lake. . .
A leisurely stroll included non-stop photo opportunities; I could not take a bad picture of Lake Bled if I tried! And this was the most scenic 3.5 miles I think I have ever walked - it was quite a pleasurable afternoon. No wonder Tito (former president of Yugoslavia) came here to unwind! His summer palace is now a hotel still boasting his Socialist wall murals. A beautiful lake and gorgeous country - with fabulous fall weather. This was early October - after the Czech Republic, we had nothing but sunshine and unseasonably warm weather. Just one more way this trip was close to perfect!
